1. Audiological Evaluation:
During this one hour appointment, hearing ability is measured utilizing pure tone air and bone conduction audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, speech audiometry and acoustic impedance measurements. Test results will give the audiologist diagnostic information regarding the nature and extent of the hearing loss as well as the need for appropriate treatment. Test results and recommendation will be explained to the patient and a written report will be sent to the patient's physician if requested.
2. Hearing Instrument Evaluation:
During this one hour appointment, the audiologist determines what brand and style of hearing instrument technology would best meet the communication needs and lifestyle of the person with hearing loss. The patient is asked to list three to five communication situations that they would like to improve.
3. Hearing Instrument Fitting & Review:
The fitting appointment takes one hour. The patient is instructed in the use and care of the hearing instruments including insertion, removal, adjusting, cleaning and telephone use. The first review appointment takes place approximately one week after the fitting. The patient is encouraged to ask questions and to provide the audiologist with information about their experiences to determine what, if any, adjustments need to be made on the hearing instruments in order to provide the best possible hearing and communication experience. Additional appointments are scheduled during the adjustment period (usually two to three appointments) to be sure all goals are met. Some time is taken to explain and review assistive device technology that may be useful to the patient, such as amplified telephone, telecommunication devices (TTD), personal FM units and infrared TV amplification systems.
